REGISTRATION FOR THE SPRING 2021 ACADEMY IS NOW OPEN.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Fire Fighter Standards program is designed to incorporate the orientation to fire service with the necessary theory and applications needed to become a certified Fire Fighter. This particular program is designed for students who are not able to attend a typical Mon-Fri 12 week program, and is great for both full time and volunteer firefighters. Upon successful completion, you will obtain your AFA (and IFSAC) Firefighter I & II certificates.*
*To receive FF 1 & 2 certificates from the AFA and IFSAC, you must successfully pass both the written & physical requirements of the class with an overall grade of 76% or higher, as well as pass the JPR, FEATS, Final Live Burn, and FF 1 & 2 written test administered by the AFA.
FF 1 & 2 COURSE:
The Fire Fighter I course provides both practical applications and an orientation to the fire service. This course includes many functions required of a fire fighter such as: fire service safety; fire behavior; building construction; protective clothing; SCBA; portable extinguishers; ropes and knots; building search and victim removal; forcible entry tools; constructions techniques; ground ladders; ventilation; water supply; loading and rolling hose; laying, carrying and advancing hose lines; water streams; vehicle and wildland fire control; sprinkler system fundamentals; salvage and overhaul; protecting evidence of fire cause; fire department communication; equipment and techniques; fire prevention and public fire education.
The Fire Fighter II course prepares the student to meet the requirements to become a state certified fire fighter. Course content includes implementing the incident management system; construction materials and building collapse; rescue and extrication tools; vehicle extrication and special rescue; hydrant flow and hose operability; tools and appliances; foam fire systems; ignitable liquid and gas fire control; fire detection; alarm and suppression systems; fire cause and origin; radio communications; incident reports; pre-incident survey; and wildland fire fighting.
INSTRUCTORS:
Over 20 instructors from around NWA participate in this program. We are a unique academy as we have instructors from full time, combination, and volunteer departments – each bringing a different practical aspect and a specific skill set with them. Our instructors boast well over 100 years of combined experience.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Prior to beginning the Standards Program, you must have the following:
- Emergency Medical Responder or higher (EMT-B, EMT-P)
- Wildland Fires
- Hazmat Awareness, Operations, and Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Current DOT physical
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
Firefighters at departments within Benton County are prioritized when the class reaches it’s capacity. You may still register if you are not a firefighter in Benton County, however your enrollment is not guaranteed prior to the registration deadline.
